I feel like throughout the entire book, Uno displays a tough, and experience driven image. When I say “experience driven”, I mean he acts this way because of his not very good background. Dann, on the other hand, shows up in this new neighborhood with this emotionless mask on. Like when he gets in a fight he humbly accepts it. He doesn't try to fight back, or defend himself, he just apologized.
2. Use the concepts of socialization to explain the book “Mexican Whiteboy”
If you look at the title, you will see there is already conflict. People in modern day society are very segregated. whether it be by ethnicity, economic class, gender, sexual orientation, or beliefs in general. This book is mainly made up of mexican characters, and mexicans are looked at minorities so when you have a cross between to different ethnicities and they are put into a group of minorities, you get a minority within minorities.
3. What new insights did you gain about race and economic class in reading this book?
I dont think that I gained any positive insight while reading Mexican Whiteboy. I think I learned that most mexican people aren't privileged and they are born into below average to poverty and there isnt a way to evade it. Another thing that I learned is that they are all very close with one-another.
Seminar Reflection
“Identify a comment made by someone else during the seminar. React to his/her statement. This could be a statement you thought was interesting, that you strongly agree or disagree with, that made you question, that you are still thinking about.”
I dont think I can quote a specific person, but at one point Garrett made a comment about value. I was really intrigued by this because I have a connection with value and my Mask project essay. In my essay I really went in depth and talked about value and how it affects different groups of people. Overall most of my comments in the seminar revolved around that one value comment that Garrett made.
Make a connection between the issues discussed in the seminar and another topic or idea (news story, novel, experience, event, your choices, movie, song, article, class…)
Like I mentioned earlier, I connected the “value” section of the seminar with my essay in the mask project we had previously done. At one point we also talked about driving forces. I said “Being born into poverty drives people to value money more as opposed to those who are born into a average to above average economic class.” I connected that back to myself by thinking of how I am being driven by a competitive force saying “I need to be the best at anything I get my hands on.” A good example is football, which is also a value of mine.
In what area do you feel you did well in seminar? Which “move” do you think you need to work on? Why?
One area I think I did well on was the evidence section. Almost all of my comments had evidence to back them up. Like my comment about the stereotypes, I had actually found the exact page and quoted flaco. I dont think I need to work on a specific area, but I think I need to work on all of them including the evidence section.
Write out the most beautiful line. Explain why it is.
This question confused me at first but I am going to think it revolves around the seminar. I am not sure who had the comment but someone said “You can't escape stereotypes” I really thought this was an important part of the seminar, not only because it is true, but because after that comment, as a group, we had a very deep conversation about low class mexican stereotypes.
